About the Program

The Postgraduate Program in Public Health was created in 2010, first the Academic Master’s and Professional Master’s Degrees in Public Health, and later, in 2013, the Doctoral degree in Public Health. It gathers researchers active in the field of Public Health, who were protagonists in the Sanitary Reform Movement and participated in the construction of the Unified Health System (SUS).

Objectives (general and specific) The Program has a single area of ​​concentration (Public Health) and has four lines of research: Policy, Planning, Management and Health Care; Health, Culture and Citizenship; Epidemiology, Environmental and Occupational Health; Translational Research in Public Health.

Academic Master’s Degree

The overall objective is to provide solid scientific training, develop research and intervention capacity in the field of Public Health.

The specific objectives are:

-To qualify professionals from health and other related areas in order to teach for higher education (undergraduate and graduate) courses in the area of ​​Public Health, as well as provide them with the ability to perform original and independent research in Public Health.

- To meet the regional and national demands for qualification of health professionals by promoting the mediation between practices developed in health services and the knowledge built in order to formulate, coordinate, execute and evaluate intervention projects that allow change in the formation and development of the health system.

 

Doctoral degree

The general objective is to provide solid scientific training, develop research and intervention capacity in the field of Public Health.

The specific objectives are:

-To qualify professionals from health and other related areas with knowledge and skills to perform original, independent and qualified research, as well as for teaching in higher education (undergraduate and graduate) courses in the area of ​​Public Health;

- To meet the regional and national demand for qualification of health professionals by promoting the mediation between practices developed in the health services and the knowledge built to formulate, coordinate, execute and evaluate intervention projects that allow change in the formation and development of the health system.

 

Professional Master's Degree

The objective is to promote permanent education for professionals working at various levels of the health care system and services, at the Graduate level, providing skills, abilities and attitudes for the managerial process in public health policies, adopting a critical and reflexive perspective.



Graduate profile

Academic Master’s Degree

A Researcher with interdisciplinary training, with skills and abilities to teach Public Health at the undergraduate and specialization levels and, regarding research, able to develop original research, starting from the definition of a socially relevant subject, to the organization and survey of primary or secondary data up to the analysis of the information collected. The master’s graduates are also expected to be sensitive to social and economic problems, and to diversity and cultural differences, while maintaining a critical and innovative approach in their proposals to change reality.

 

Doctoral Degree

A Researcher with interdisciplinary training, with skills and abilities for teach Public Health at Graduate levels (master's and doctoral) and, regarding research, able to carry out innovative work that contributes to the advancement of scientific knowledge in the area. In addition, they are expected to be able to solve emerging health problems and new challenges of health systems, at national and global levels. The graduates are also expected to have a critical approach to the analysis of socioeconomic, political, social and cultural determinants of health.

 

Professional Master’s Degree

A Professional with a sense of social responsibility and commitment to citizenship, in the different scenarios of health care practices of the Unified Health System (SUS), adopting the perspective of health promotion. They are expected to have skills and abilities to:

  • Plan and manage solutions for health problems using strategies that can ensure the participation of relevant stakeholders;
  • Administer and manage health services and systems from the inter-sectorial and health promotion perspectives;
  • Responsibly manage strategic and financial resources ;
  • Regulate, monitor and evaluate health services at all levels;
  • Develop the management of working processes as well as permanent education actions for health workers;
  • Produce and manage health information, education and communication technologies;
  • Define support technologies for the resolution of Primary Care / Family Health Strategy;
  • Contribute to overcome the current fragmented model of health care aiming at the construction of integrated health models;
  • Support the construction of a health care network that involves a systematic and planned approach to care for vulnerable populations and/ or in situations of acute and chronic events.
